Buying A Puppy
This is one of the most
important decisions you will make. You and your family and you will be
responsible for a live creature who may live for about 15 or 18 years.
Before you start your search for your Puppy, look at the kind of
lifestyle you and your family have, and determine if a puppy is able to
fit comfortably into it.
First, take a look at your needs and work environment. Are you able to get
up at night and take care of a puppy properly, and are you able to get up
early in the morning to take the puppy out side to do his business? Do you
have the time to feed him/her before you start your work day, or are you
always rushing out the door almost late for work?
Are you, or a family member able to always feed, walk, and spend time
playing with your new puppy? Are you able to afford the upkeep of food,
insurance and medical expenses?
If you and or your Family travels, are you able to take your puppy with
you or find a reliable person to take care of your Puppy? Leaving a dog
alone in a house can be very dangerous to a young puppy. Can you afford to
pay for the cost of keeping your Puppy in a Kennel? Where, and who will
you buy your Puppy from?
Here at Suzy's Yorkies we feel you should buy your Puppy from a reputable
breeder that provides a contract as well as a health guarantee. Try not to buy from a Pet Shop as most puppies are
bred in puppy mills. Don't buy from a dealer, usually called a broker, as
once they receive your money they never offer a bill of sale or heath
guarantee, nor is the puppy registered, vetted, or de-wormed. And in some
cases it make be sick or die and you will be left to pay huge medical
bills.
Never buy a Puppy that is under 7 weeks of age as it is a state
requirement to keep them at least this long. To
go through a process of being taken away from the dam at a young age may
cause severe problems for a Puppy so young and it may cause psychological
problems later on in life (this is commonly know as well socialized).
Smaller pups, referred to as tcup size, may need to stay longer with the
breeder to monitor their eating and sugar levels.
When Looking to Buy a Puppy, do lots of research. Look at the Breed and
study as much as you can through the Internet, library, and talk to as
many breeders as you can. Look through books and study the standard of the
Puppy, or contact the AKC (American Kennel Club,
http://www.akc.org
). They can give you information on the Puppy Breed Club.
Be patient when looking for a Puppy as it takes time to find
the right puppy and perhaps do not buy the first one that you see. As you will be
rewarded many times over with owning a Puppy. I also believe
that a breeder who rears her puppies in her home should allow you to come
and look at her puppies more than just once. You should be able to visit
the home of the breeder many times over, after all you want to establish a
good report with those whom you are buying your puppy from because puppies
can change from day to day and week to week in looks and personality.
